CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Won’t you find it a little, you know, awkward?” Willow teased. “You and your handsome geek ‘friend’, sharing a bed?”

“How dare you!” Floxy laughed. “We won’t be sharing a bed, more like friends having a sleepover, camping out. I don’t even fancy sleeping on that hard, musty four-poster. I’m grabbing my own pillows and a couple of sleeping bags. Besides, Albus will be sleeping in the middle of us, and little Lila. Oh, my god she is so cute! I’ve never seen a cat as small as her. Tiny, itsy bitsy, little puddy!”

“Are you going soft in your old age?” Willow laughed and poked her friend in the ribs. “How about this? It has one of those skirt bits attached to it?” She held up the swimming costume, which they both guessed was the right size for Primrose.

“Polka dot? How about the one with the flowers, she likes flowers.” Floxy examined the turquoise and white, flowered costume with the plain black bottom half. “This is more Primrose.”

“My treat. You buy those pets of yours something special. How about a little fluffy ball for Lila? Another doll for Albus and a set of weights for Bridget?”

Floxy laughed out loud. “Poor Bridget! She could do with a new collar though. Maybe I’ll buy them all new ones, with tags. Do you think they do cat collars in teeny weeny, miniature sizes?”

“Aww, I can’t wait to meet Lila. Maybe I should sell my flat and move nearer to the shop? If I had a garden and a proper living space…”

“I know you’ve just done up the book shop, but do you know the sweet shop is coming up for freehold sale? Look how much bigger it is, it has a proper rear garden, like the book shop, and it also has…”

“An upstairs flat! Maybe if I took that lease over, someone else could turn the Rare Books Loft into the new sweet shop? Besides, it’s on the other side of the square. The gardens on that side always catch the sun better. Do you think it’s a good idea?”

“It’s a great idea! Be honest, you don’t spend that much time at your flat and you are growing out of the nightlife thing now.”

“Aww, but what about Tobias? I’d feel like I was leaving him behind.”

“Why? Seems to me your friendly ghost is getting around a little now, he goes where we go. He isn’t grounded.”

The department store was noisy; people were noisy. When you weren’t used to all the chatter in the background, it rose to deafening levels. The cars honked, signals beeped, tills rang, kids screamed, the crowds were an endless stream of human beings in a hurry. Tired faces, oblivious youngsters stuck to their phones, walking in dazes. Whereas in Goldhenge, time stopped. The cobbled streets, small foot traffic, the lazy pace and unhurried business was bliss. Everyone knew each other, the small community worked well together. They soon found themselves walking into the estate agents.

“Take a seat, someone will be with you in a minute.
